Daily Devotion
But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 3:13-14
As we reflect on our lives, it is important to honestly examine our choices, attitudes, and actions. Reflection helps us grow. Repentance helps us change. But God never intended for self-examination to become self-condemnation.
Many people become trapped in the past. They replay failures, regrets, missed opportunities, and poor decisions over and over again. Instead of learning from yesterday, they become imprisoned by it.
The enemy loves to keep us focused on our mistakes because he knows that a person consumed by regret often struggles to move forward in faith.
God's desire is different.
While He calls us to acknowledge our shortcomings, He also calls us to embrace His mercy and look ahead with hope. Through Christ, our past does not have to define our future. God's grace is greater than our failures, and His plans are bigger than our mistakes.
The Apostle Paul understood this principle. Before encountering Christ, he had a painful history filled with actions he surely wished he could undo. Yet he refused to spend the rest of his life looking backward. Instead, he fixed his eyes on what God was doing ahead of him.
Hope is not pretending the past never happened. Hope is believing that God can redeem it. Hope is trusting that God is still working. Hope is believing that your best days spiritually may still be ahead of you.
Sometimes we become so focused on what we should have done that we miss what God is inviting us to do now. We become so occupied with closed doors that we fail to see the new opportunities He is opening.
God specializes in new beginnings. He restores broken things. He renews weary hearts. He revives forgotten dreams.
He gives fresh purpose to those who thought their season had passed.
No matter what this past year has held, God's mercies are still new every morning. His grace is still sufficient. His promises are still true.
Today, thank God for the lessons of yesterday, but do not build your home there. Learn from the past. Grow from the past. But move forward with hope.
The God who has been faithful behind you is already waiting for you in the future.
Good Morning Lord,
Thank You Lord for Your mercy, grace, and faithfulness. Help me release the regrets and burdens of the past and place my hope fully in You. Thank You that my mistakes do not have the final word because Your grace is greater. Give me courage to move forward, faith to trust Your plans, and hope to embrace the future You are preparing for me. Help me to walk confidently into the new things You desire to do in my life. In Jesus name,
Amen.
