In 1 Peter 5:2-3 Peter tells leaders to “shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for gain, but with eagerness; not lording it over the people but proving to be examples to the flock.”Believers are fighting the “good fight of faith. Do you think you should be encouraged to depend more on Jesus to walk more fully in your spiritual inheritance or pick up the message of, “Try harder this coming week to be a good Christian” or, “Do such-and-such in order to live up to the spiritual standard”? Embrace teaching when it encourages you to embrace Jesus. Then you will be around Believers participating in the same struggle you are; the fight of faith. The “Try-hard”messages indicates that people fight to live by their own religious self-effort, by worship of the will. This kind of “church” is a religious version of the world’s systems, which also withholds love and acceptance until our behavior measures up. Yes, you might be welcomed with open arms as a visitor, but as “home folk” your walk with God will most likely be wide open for the scrutiny and criticism of all who “know” what your spirituality should look like. Not one of us is above accountability. But frankly, our relationship with Jesus is too precious to allow it to be dragged through the mud.

“And now, a word to you who are elders in the churches. I, too, am an elder and a witness to the sufferings of Christ. And I, too, will share in his glory when he is revealed to the whole world. As a fellow elder, I appeal to you: Care for the flock that God has entrusted to you. Watch over it willingly, not grudgingly—not for what you will get out of it, but because you are eager to serve God. Don’t Lord it over the people assigned to your care, but lead them by your own good example. And when the Great Shepherd appears, you will receive a crown of never-ending glory and honor. In the same way, you who are younger must accept the authority of the elders. And all of you, dress yourselves in humility as you relate to one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor. Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.”
