PB Devotion
Turn to me now, while there is time. Give me your hearts. Come with fasting, weeping, and mourning. Don’t tear your clothing in your grief but tear your hearts instead.” Return to the Lord your God, for he is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. He is eager to relent and not punish.”
Joel 2:12-13
“Live by the Spirit, I say, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh.”
Galatians 5:16
When we want to lose weight, we may choose to forego that slice of chocolate cake. We deny the desire of the flesh to eat the chocolate cake because we have a stronger desire to pursue the goal of weight loss. As followers of Jesus, our desires of the flesh do not simply go away at our baptism. We learn to live by the Spirit. A new desire gives us strength to walk away from something we want and to want something better. The desires of the flesh are not always bad. God has given us desire. But we must always test our desires in light of the Spirit. Does the thing I desire bring honor to God? Have our desires grown out of proportion to what may be spiritually healthy? What is the impact on myself or others if I choose to gratify the desires of the flesh? As we walk through these 40 Days of Purpose take time to test your desires.

“Now to Him who is able to [carry out His purpose and] do superabundantly more than all that we dare ask or think [infinitely beyond our greatest prayers, hopes, or dreams], according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations forever and ever. Amen.”
