PB Devotion

Fasting, by definition, is abstaining from food. The result of fasting goes beyond just denying ourselves physical nourishment. We want to position our hearts to encounter Jesus. Many times people may fast with the wrong focus, seeking to earn God’s favor or attention. But we can never manipulate God. His eye is always on you. He knows you better than you know yourself and sees everything you say and do. Gods delight is in our obedience and our desire for intimacy with Him. More important to Him than fasting is that we do His will. The Lord spoke through Samuel the prophet, saying that it is better to obey God than to offer Him a special sacrifice.

“But Samuel replied, “What is more pleasing to the Lord: your burnt offerings and sacrifices or your obedience to his voice? Listen! Obedience is better than sacrifice, and submission is better than offering the fat of rams. Rebellion is as sinful as witchcraft, and stubbornness as bad as worshiping idols…

As we turn our hearts and prepare to fast; know that it’s obedience we are after.
