PB Devotional
“Elders who do their work well should be respected and paid well, especially those who work hard at both preaching and teaching. For the Scripture says, “You must not muzzle an ox to keep it from eating as it treads out the grain.” And in another place, “Those who work deserve their pay!””
1 Timothy 5:17-18 NLT
Putting a muzzle on the ox would prevent it from eating grain while it was working. This might save a small amount of grain, but it means the ox can't replenish its strength while it works. It is more sensible and fair to let the animal eat while it works.
The animal like the human being is under authority to work. The animal is under the authority of the human and the human is under the authority of God. The Holy Spirit imparts spiritual gifts and we are to use them for His glory. We do not belong to ourselves. We belong to Him. The animal depends on the proceeds of the field to feed, work and live. In the same way those who teach depend on the proceeds from the field to feed, work and live.
There is a call for the worker to be committed to “treading out the grain”.
