PB Devotion
Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. Do not stifle the Holy Spirit. Do not scoff at prophecies, but test everything that is said. Hold on to what is good. Stay away from every kind of evil.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-22
The command to not despise prophesy falls between, not to quench the Spirit and to test all things spoken. If we do these things we can keep a perfect balance in discerning the things we hear. To despise something is to reject, disregard, or treat it as if it has no value. The Word of God always has value. We are called to test all things, including prophecies but we do not despise true prophecies and the Word of God is always true. God gave prophets to the church to help believers grow in the faith. So test the word of the prophet through scripture and confirmation by another. The Holy Spirit is quenched when we dampen the effect of His influence in our lives. When the Holy Spirit does something give credit to the Holy Spirit; not you or someone else. When a prophetic word is spoken about you and you know it’s true; agree. When you are exposed by the power of the Holy Spirit, confronted about a situation, tell the truth. When we do less we dampen the effect of the His influence in our lives. As we move forward to close out this year practice discernment. Do not quench the Holy Spirit, do not despise prophecy and test everything you hear against scripture. What does the Word say? Never stop praying and remain thankful.
