PB Devotion
Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 NIV
You may be thinking, Do I have to drum these up myself? No, you can’t drum up joy. You can’t drum up enough will power to pray without ceasing. You can’t drum up enough gratitude to be thankful. It is not only God’s will to will it; it is God’s will to work it.
“It is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.”
Philippians 2:13
God wills it and He works it by His Holy Spirit. That’s why I say, if you’re filled with the Spirit, you’ll speak to yourself in psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. You will meditate on the Word of God. That’s rejoicing. And you’ll offer that to the Lord, because that’s prayer. You’ll give thanks because it’s the evidence of who has the inward spiritual control.
“Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain.”
Philippians 2:12-16 NIV
Let’s read this one more time in the NLT.
“Dear friends, you always followed my instructions when I was with you. And now that I am away, it is even more important. Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear. For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him. Do everything without complaining and arguing, so that no one can criticize you. Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people. Hold firmly to the word of life; then, on the day of Christ’s return, I will be proud that I did not run the race in vain and that my work was not useless.”
Philippians 2:12-16 NLT
