Turn to me now, while there is time. Give me your hearts. Come with fasting, weeping, and mourning. Do not conform to the patterns of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will able to test and approve what God’s will is for you,
which is good and pleasing and perfect.
Romans 12:2

Paul warns the church in Rome not to be conformed to the world. Our culture or time period in which we live should not be what shapes us. For the 1st century Roman church, there was danger in conforming to the values of Imperial Rome. Those values included the worship of political leaders as false gods, putting hope in military might, or exploiting the poor for financial gain. We are halfway through 40 Days of Purpose. What is shaping 2021? What does it mean to conform to the attitudes, opinions, and values of the world around you? No matter where you live in the world; and no matter what time period, we always must decide whether to be shaped by the cultural norms around us or by the Word of Jesus Christ. There is a sacrifice involved and it will take courage to live counter-culturally. Ask God for eyes to see what he is inviting us to “unfollow” the culture and ask Him to strengthen you to follow Him.
